Great New Institute at University of Miami Frost School of Music

If you would like to cover this, comment below and of course contacts are below for more info:

HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE FINDS ITS NEW HOME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Frost School Imbeds HMI Within Its Curriculum

CORAL GABLES, Fla., September 23, 2009 – After ten years in Los Angeles, the Henry Mancini Institute (HMI) has found a new home at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Dean Shelton G. “Shelly” Berg was intimately familiar with HMI and the Mancini Family during his tenure as head of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. When HMI announced its plans to close, several leading music organizations from across the United States expressed interest in hosting HMI. The Mancini family chose Dean Berg and the Frost School of Music.

“The Henry Mancini Institute has a tradition of equipping our nation’s most talented students and young professionals with the necessary pragmatic performance and entrepreneurial skills for earning a living in a commercialized world while staying true to the highest level of artistry and musical excellence.” said Dean Berg. “We are excited to infuse the Frost School of Music curriculum with HMI values and experiences. The Mancini Institute is an extremely well known entity, and its inclusion at the Frost School represents extraordinary possibilities for us.”

In the past, HMI was a summer institute. Now HMI is embedded within the Frost School of Music curriculum. At the heart of HMI is the concept of preparing music students for careers as “working” musicians. As part of the agreement between the two entities, the Frost School of Music now houses the HMI library, which consists of hundreds of pieces for orchestra by Henry Mancini and other film and contemporary composers.

Henry Mancini’s widow, Ginny, a former vocalist who sang with Mel Torme’s “Mel-tones,” said, “The Henry Mancini family wholeheartedly supports Dean Shelly Berg as custodian of the Henry Mancini Institute at the Frost School of Music. With our shared vision, Dean Berg will provide and insure the perfect atmosphere to foster and inspire talented musicians to achieve a unique and profound standing in the professional music community.”

On October 23, 2008, the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra made its Frost School of Music debut at the Bruce Hornsby and Friends benefit concert at the Bank United Center as part the 25th anniversary of Festival Miami. Hornsby shared center stage with an all-star musical cast including Steve Miller, Patti Austin, Monica Mancini, Dave Koz, Ricky Skaggs, Tom Scott, Gregg Field, and Frost School alumni Will Lee and Jon Secada.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, the HMI Orchestra will perform with musical giants including Monica Mancini, Arturo Sandoval, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Dave Grusin, John Secada, Patti Austin, Arturo Sandoval, Gary Burton, Nestor Torres, and Sammy Figueroa. Grammy award winning violinist Mark O’Connor will be Artist-In-Residence at the Frost School and will work with many HMI Fellows. HMI will also collaborate in a long-term project/relationship with legendary producer Phil Ramone.

The Fall 2009 semester officially marks the beginning of the Henry Mancini Institute at the Frost School of Music, in that 37 performance and composition related graduate assistantships are now HMI Fellowships. The goal is to have 65 HMI Fellows by 2012. An HMI Fellow is a graduate student receiving full tuition and stipend at the Frost School of Music to be a member of the HMI Orchestra and work as a teaching assistant.

J1: Obama Lays Out Stragedy for American Innovation

Look into this , perhaps interview quickly a political studies professor...etc.

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

____________________________________________________________

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 21, 2009

President Obama Lays Out Strategy for American Innovation

WASHINGTON, DC -- President Obama will visit Hudson Valley Community College today where he will tour a technology classroom, visit a lab and deliver remarks on his commitment to fostering new jobs, new businesses, and new industries by laying the groundwork and the ground rules to best tap our innovative potential.

Since taking office, President Obama has taken historic steps to lay the foundation for the innovation economy of the future. The Obama Innovation Strategy builds on well over $100 billion of Recovery Act funds that support innovation, additional support for education, infrastructure and others in the Recovery Act and the President’s Budget, and novel regulatory and executive order initiatives.

It seeks to harness the inherent ingenuity of the American people and a dynamic private sector to ensure that the next expansion is more solid, broad-based, and beneficial than previous ones. It focuses on critical areas where sensible, balanced government policies can lay the foundation for innovation that leads to quality jobs and shared prosperity.

It has three parts:

1. Invest in the Building Blocks of American Innovation. We must first ensure that our economy is given all the necessary tools for successful innovation, from investments in research and development to the human, physical, and technological capital needed to perform that research and transfer those innovations.

2. Promote Competitive Markets that Spur Productive Entrepreneurship. It is imperative to create a national environment ripe for entrepreneurship and risk taking that allows U.S. companies to be internationally competitive in a global exchange of ideas and innovation. Through competitive markets, innovations diffuse and scale appropriately across industries and globally.

3. Catalyze Breakthroughs for National Priorities. There are certain sectors of exceptional national importance where the market is unlikely to produce the desirable outcomes on its own. These include developing alternative energy sources, reducing costs and improving lives with health IT, and manufacturing advanced vehicles. In these industries where markets may fail on their own, government can be part of the solution.

The fact sheets and white paper for the innovation strategy can be found here:

J1: Author Anita Diamant (of "Red Tent") Brings a reflection of Nazi Europe

She will be presenting her new book, etc. (read below). If you want to cover, contact Books and Books for a press pass. Sign on Quick!

Time:
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 7:30 p.m.
Location: Temple Israel, 137 N.E 19th Street, Miami, FL 33132

Just as she gave voice to the silent women of the Old Testament in The Red Tent, Anita Diamant creates a cast of breathtakingly vivid characters -- young women who escaped to Israel from Nazi Europe -- in this intensely dramatic novel. Day After Night (Scribner, $27) is based on the extraordinary true story of the October 1945 rescue of more than two hundred prisoners from the Atlit internment camp, a prison for "illegal" immigrants run by the British military near the Mediterranean coast north of Haifa. The story is told through the eyes of four young women at the camp with profoundly different stories. All of them survived the Holocaust: Shayndel, a Polish Zionist; Leonie, a Parisian beauty; Tedi, a hidden Dutch Jew; and Zorah, a concentration camp survivor.

Haunted by unspeakable memories and losses, afraid to begin to hope, Shayndel, Leonie, Tedi, and Zorah find salvation in the bonds of friendship and shared experience even as they confront the challenge of re-creating themselves in a strange new country. This is an unforgettable story of tragedy and redemption, a novel that reimagines a moment in history with such stunning eloquence that we are haunted and moved by every devastating detail. Day After Night is a triumphant work of fiction. Tickets are required for this event and are available at all Books & Books locations. The BOOK-AND-RECEPTION TICKET: For just $40, you get a copy of Day After Night, a ticket to the private wine-and-hors d’oeuvres reception with Anita Diamant and a reserved priority seat at the reading. BOOK-AND-RECEPTION TICKETS ARE LIMITED. To get your book-and-reception ticket, stop by all Books & Books locations. GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS also are available for free at all Books & Books locations. Private Reception starts at 6:30pm. Public author event begins at 7:30pm.

J1: Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009

This is a letter from the Office of The President, Yes the president of the United States :).

It basically shows the different sections and goals of the act. If you could cover this with more detail, perhaps people's opinion (survey students, interview Poli Sci professor?)

Cover it briefly with bullets, or fully. This is in your own hands :)

EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET

WASHINGTON, D.C. 20503

September 15, 2009

(House Rules)

STATEMENT OF ADMINISTRATION POLICY

H.R. 3221 — Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009

(Rep. Miller, D-California, and 41 cosponsors)

The Administration strongly supports House passage of H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal

Responsibility Act of 2009. The Administration is pleased that the bill will make key investments

in college affordability and education reform, eliminate wasteful subsidies to financial institutions,

and save taxpayers money. The bill takes critical steps toward achieving the President’s goal of

restoring the United States to first in the world in college completion by 2020.

The Administration supports the bill’s reforms that would stabilize student loan programs using

proven, private-sector practices. Federally guaranteed student loans provide banks and other

lenders with large profits that are set by the legislative process. Under H.R. 3221, the use of the

Direct Loan program would eliminate this process and serve students with essentially the same

terms and conditions, but at much lower cost for taxpayers. Students and taxpayers would no

longer be subjected to uncertainty when there is turmoil in the financial markets. The Direct Loan

program would use lower-cost Federal capital, and the Department of Education would hire

nonprofits and private companies, selected through a competitive contracting process, to provide

the best services for students at the lowest cost for taxpayers. For the sake of taxpayers as well as

students, entities providing student loan services should be selected based on performance and

cost.

The Administration is pleased that H.R. 3221 would use the savings from these reforms to make

key investments in providing Americans the skills they need to compete for 21st century jobs. The

Administration strongly supports the bill’s provision of additional funding that would support

growth in the Pell Grant program, the cornerstone of the Nation’s efforts to make sure that all

Americans can afford college. The Administration supports the bill’s simplification of the Free

Application for Federal Student Aid, eliminating unnecessary questions that act as obstacles for

aspiring college students. The Administration is also pleased that the bill would establish a new

College Access and Completion Innovation Fund to develop, implement, and evaluate new

approaches to improving college success and completion, particularly for students from

disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Administration strongly supports the bill’s inclusion of the President’s American Graduation

Initiative to usher in new innovations and reforms for our Nation’s community colleges.

H.R. 3221 would support the President’s call for an additional five million community college

graduates, including students who earn or go on to earn degrees, certificates, or industry-

recognized credentials, by 2020 by funding innovative strategies for building partnerships with

employers and the workforce investment system, reforming developmental education, linking

community colleges and high schools, and providing students with personalized academic and

counseling services. The bill also would provide $2.5 billion in grants to leverage private-sector

2

financing for an estimated total of $10 billion in investments to modernize community college

facilities so that they meet employer and student needs. The bill also would include funding for

the development and dissemination of high-quality, freely available online training and courses.

The Administration also strongly supports H.R. 3221’s creation of the President’s proposed Early

Learning Challenge Fund. Empirical studies have shown that investing in high-quality early

learning provides several dollars in return for every dollar invested. Unfortunately, the quality of

early learning settings varies greatly and, despite some progress, early learning programs are held

to inconsistent standards. Reforms geared toward strengthening quality and improving educational

outcomes across all settings are critically needed. This program would challenge States to develop

model systems of early learning, which incorporate a statewide infrastructure of integrated early

learning support and services for children from birth through age five. In order to compete for an

award under this program, States would commit to reforming essential components of their early

learning system, including establishing a high standard of quality across programs; increasing

participation of disadvantaged children in comprehensive, high-quality early learning programs;

focusing new and existing programs on improving child learning and outcomes; and creating

program rating, monitoring, and professional development systems so that more children are

prepared to succeed in kindergarten.

The bill also includes an expanded and modernized Federal Perkins Loan Program that can help to

reduce students’ need for private and other non-Federal loans that often carry high interest rates

and lack consumer protections. The amended Perkins Loan Program would retain a low interest

rate while allowing financial aid officers at colleges across the country the flexibility to provide

additional assistance to those students who need extra funds to complete their education.

As this bill continues through the legislative process, the Administration would welcome

improvements. In addition to the critical support for Pell Grants already in the bill, the

Administration would support further measures to strengthen the Pell Grant program. Loan

servicing provisions should be refined to minimize unnecessary costs. The Administration asks

the Congress to strengthen accountability and transparency for institutions voluntarily choosing to

participate in the College Access and Completion Innovation Fund, and to increase the share of the

Fund set aside for evaluation. Finally, the Administration urges the Congress to provide the full

$10 billion requested for the Early Learning Challenge Fund, and $12 billion for the American

Graduation Initiative for community colleges.

The Administration commends the Congress for its commitment to making education a national

priority. The Administration looks forward to continuing to work with the Congress to strengthen

this vital legislation.

J1: Survey of Gay Rights and the current Progress, Struggles.

Hello, I received this letter from a gay activist, who was a student and a friend of Harvey Milk's (There is a documentary on Harvey Milk, recommended, as well as the featured award-winning film: Milk)

I'd like this to be covered as a survey of the progress, perhaps a timeline? With the current struggles, opinions.

Of course, this is a north star, but you can let it direct you in a different way.

Dear Friends:

It has been over 30 years since my friend and teacher, gay rights activist Harvey Milk, was assassinated. Today, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have won limited rights in a handful of states, but we are still second class citizens throughout the United States.

Harvey once said, "It takes no compromising to give people their rights."

This morning, Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) introduced a bill in Congress to repeal the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act." If passed by the Congress, Rep. Nadler's legislation would be a real step forward in the march for full equality and we applaud his efforts, but LGBT people must stop settling for compromises and half measures.

Send a message to your Representative demanding full equality now!

http://equalityacrossamerica.org/equalityleague

Equal rights are not a "gay" issue. They are about our shared human rights: safety in our schools and jobs, equitable healthcare and housing, and protection for our families, to name a few.

Like all other Americans, LGBT people are guaranteed equal protection under the law by the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Free and equal people do not compromise, and that's why we're marching on Washington on October 11 with one simple demand: Equal protection for LGBT people in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states. Now.

Please send a letter to your Representative to say that repealing DOMA is a good start, but it isn't enough. There are no fractions of equality.

http://equalityacrossamerica.org/equalityleague

When Harvey spoke at Gay Freedom Day at San Francisco City Hall in 1978, he invoked the words of the Declaration of Independence: "All [people] are created equal. No matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words."

No more compromises. We are equal.

Miami Students Launch Campaign for Violence-Free, Stress-Free Miami
Smile Miami: changing lives one smile at a time

Miami, FL – Who says you need a raise, a vacation, or a big piece of chocolate cake to be happy?

A group of Florida International University students says something as simple as a smile can change a life and a community. Inspired by a similar effort in Washington D.C., FIU students are taking on the challenge of getting thousands of people across Miami to smile.

Why? Miami citizens are facing more stress than ever before – the national unemployment rate is the highest it has been in 26 years and Florida’s unemployment rate is in the double digits for the first time in 34 years. The rate of foreclosures in Miami-Dade County has doubled and is expected to rise even more, contributing to stress in individuals and increased family violence rates.

Research shows that just the sight of another person smiling can activate your facial "smile muscles" (Dimberg & Petterson, 2000; Dimberg, Thunberg & Elmehed, 2000; Niedenthal, 2007). Recent research published in the reputed journal Psychological Science this month suggests that even seeing the printed word "smile" or "frown" activates the corresponding facial muscles. Seeing someone smile, or just reading the word "smile," activates your "zygomatic" facial muscle, which is responsible elevating the sides of your lips into a smile.

What? FIU students are launching Violence-free, Stress-Free Miami campaign in two ways:

1. In the weeks leading up to Sept. 13, these college students are taking to the streets to collect thousands of photographs of people smiling. And as they do so, the students are encouraging Miami citizens to consider the value of their smiles, and how easy it is to lose them over small things like bad traffic or a missed phone call.

2. FIU students partnered with the Art of Living Foundation, an international non-profit educational organization, to organize Yoga Empowerment Service Plus (YES Plus) -- a dynamic leadership workshop for students and young professionals. Thousands of students from universities such as Stanford, Harvard and Cornell report less stress, more energy and motivation, better sleep and broader smiles since taking the workshop.

When: Smile Miami Campaign: Aug. 22– Sep. 13
YES Plus workshops: Sep 15–20 and Oct 20-25

Where: Smile Miami Campaign: FIU campus and the streets of Miami
YES Plus workshop: South Miami Senior High School, 6856 SW 53rd St.

J1: College of Arts and Sciences students at UM help Senegal students get laptops

Interesting story coming from the University of Miami. Get contacts, interview their ideas and progress. Contact Elizabeth: eamore@miami.edu for more information

Good afternoon,

I write to you in regards to the UM College of Arts & Science’s English dept and their project “Laptops in Senegal”.

We believe we have a great story/profile for you to cover;

UM has a team of four college students (and ONE members) in the US who spent their summer in Mboro, Senegal working with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) and the Peace Corps to bring 200 laptops to students at Ecole Notre Dame Elementary School. Ecole Notre Dame is unique in that it receives free power and clean water from the local phosphorous factory. Free power has greatly assisted in the financial sustainability of deploying OLPC’s XO laptops to all second, third, fourth and fifth grade students by October.

See here for more information; http://www.one.org/blog/?p=7703

Please advise of your thoughts and/or comments. Stephanie Selvick, a UM PhD student in English Literature, is available for comment.

I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Amore, B.B.A., M.A.
