Each year, the Annual Jewish Book Festival welcomes the finest scholars and writers to what has become one of the premier Jewish book festivals in the United States today. Some of the acclaimed writers who have participated in the festival include Ambassador Dennis Ross, Alan Dershowitz, Michael Oren and Rabbi Irwin Kula; journalists Martin Fletcher, Lynn Sherr and Jeffrey Zaslow; actors Jack Klugman, Harry Shearer, and Evan Handler; screenwriters Jennifer Weiner, Alan Zweibel, Phil Rosenthal and Jodi Picoult; humorists Judy Gold and Judith Viorst; and Women's Day Luncheon guests Dr. Nancy Snyderman and Susan Issacs. The collection of writings at the Alper JCC’s 29th Annual Jewish Book Festival weaves three powerful words – heritage, humor and harmony - giving each a richly unique meaning. Bestselling author Chris Bohjalian tells the story of lovers who struggle when they lack a common heritage; while Jacqueline Demar Greene proudly introduces Rebecca Rubin, the first Jewish doll from the popular American Girl series, and shares a fictitious account of treasured traditions and tales of growing up in New York’s Lower East Side. Slate editor David Plotz draws on Sienfeld-esque humor as he interprets his heritage after reading every single word of the Old Testament. Harmony denotes peace when former Israeli Ambassador Martin Indyk shares sobering advice garnered from his years of diplomatic service; and Grammy-winning composers Peter Yarrow and Charles Strouse find harmony in the melodic sounds of their award-winning music. WHAT/WHO:

GRAMMY AWARD WINNING SONGWRITERS & CAT 5 MUSIC PUBLISHING UNITE FOR SONGWRITER’S SHOWCASE

WHEN/WHERE:
Grammy award winners, Bruce Hornsby & Shawn Colvin, will serve as judges in the annual Cat 5 Music Publishing Songwriter’s Showcase at University of Miami’s Gusman Concert Hall on October 21st at 8pm.

Gusman Concert Hall is located on the University of Miami campus at 1314 Miller Drive in Coral Gables, Florida. All ages are welcome. Admission is free. More information can be found atwww.festivalmiami.com.

WHY:
The Songwriter’s Showcase is a feature event of Festival Miami and is included in the “Creative American Music” theme. The Songwriter’s Showcase is used to highlight songwriting talent on the University of Miami campus and to build a thriving songwriting community in South Florida.

Twelve University of Miami student songwriters will compete for the prize to perform as opener of the Shawn Colvin with Bruce Hornsby concert, scheduled to take place the following night, October 22nd at 8pm in Gusman Concert Hall.
