EVENT TO FEATURE FREE BUSINESS SEMINARS AND PERFORMANCES

Miami, FL August 28, 2009 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will open its doors to the community for a free volunteer festival on Friday September 11, 2009, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Center’s first-ever United We Serve Volunteer Miami Day will feature free seminars covering topics in energy conservation, arts education programs, personal and career advancement, and community involvement; live musical performances; a preview of the Arsht Center’s 2009-2010 season and the exclusive opportunity to become an engaged volunteer in our community. United We Serve Volunteer Miami Day is inspired by President Barack Obama’s national United We Serve volunteer initiative.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez will kick-off the event as keynote speaker. Other participants will include Adrienne Arsht Center President and CEO M. John Richard and Chairman of the Board Ricky Arriola. Representatives from some of Miami’s leading non-profit organizations and business will speak on topics ranging from how “going green” can impact individuals’ lifestyles and businesses, to how people can market their skills in a tough economy.

Entertainment offerings will include a live outdoor concert by the Spam Allstars (5:30 p.m.), performances by the New World School Concert Choir(12:00 p.m.) and Bahamas Junkanoo Miami Revue (12:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.), and an appearance by Florida Marlins mascot Billy the Marlin. Free tours of the Adrienne Arsht Center will be conducted in English and Spanish at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“Our 600 volunteers play an integral role at the Adrienne Arsht Center,” said M. John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “We understand the value added to our organization through volunteerism. We encourage our professional staff to do the same for other non-profit organizations. We are proud to host the United We Serve Volunteer Fair.”

In his United We Serve address to the nation President Barack Obama said, “America’s new foundation will be built one community at a time.” With that same spirit, the Adrienne Arsht Center’s inaugural United We Serve Volunteer Miami Day will bring together various organizations from around the community, including Hands On Miami, American Red Cross, Alliance for the Aging and many others, to educate and provide volunteer opportunities for participants.

UNITED WE SERVE VOLUNTEER MIAMI DAY: SEMINARS & EVENTS

VOLUNTEER DIRECTORS NETWORKING AND BREAK-OUT SESSIONS (times vary)

Led by DOVIA, C-One and Hands On Miami, these sessions will offer professionals who work with volunteers the opportunity to begin a dialogue about common challenges and possible collaborations.

THE NEW ECONOMY IS GREEN WITH PAUL ZAMEK (1:30 p.m.)

Paul Zamek, Vice President of Kirksey Architecture will speak on what “Going Green” really means to individuals and businesses and about the process and value of achieving LEED Certification for the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

HEAD OF THE CLASS AND AHEAD OF THE CURVE (2:30 p.m.)

Deanna Marie Costa, Director of Education & Outreach for the Adrienne Arsht Center, will discuss how the Center’s programming is taking a lead on education and artistic programming for children, families and seniors.

HOW TO MARKET YOURSELF IN A TOUGH JOB MARKET (3:15 p.m.)

Trish Brennan, Vice President of Human Resources for the Adrienne Arsht Center, will give effective advice on how to market yourself in a tough job market, during your interviews and on your resume.

HOW TO SERVE ON A BOARD (4:00 p.m.)
Linda Schotthoefer, Executive Director of the Center On Nonprofit Effectiveness (C-One) powered by Hands On Miami, will discuss the important factors and components of choosing and serving on non-profit boards.

2009-2010 SEASON PREVIEW WITH SCOTT SHILLER, ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT (5:00 p.m.)

UNITED WE SERVE VOLUNTEER MIAMI DAY

The Adrienne Arsht Center is hosting its inaugural UNITED WE SERVE VOLUNTEER MIAMI DAY as a culminating event for President Barack Obama’s United We Serve summer volunteer initiative in the efforts to stimulate the economy through volunteerism. Keynote speaker Mayor Carlos Alvarez, leading non-profit organizations and leaders, and the Adrienne Arsht Center will join forces to inspire volunteers to continue their good volunteer efforts and others to become volunteers with free activities, performances, business and volunteering seminars, Adrienne Arsht Center tours, prizes, and much more.
