Miami Beach: FREE WIFI FOR ALL!

Miami Beach’s Free Citywide WiFi Service is Hot

-- Wire-Cutting Ceremony to be Held Friday, October 30 @ 3:00 p.m. --

Miami Beach, FL -- Miami Beach is now hotter than ever. Free wireless Internet connection has swept the city. The City of Miami Beach worked with IBM and other organizations including FDOT, FPL and Wireless Nets to complete what is amongst the first free, citywide, municipal WiFi networks in the country and first in South Florida.

An official “wire-cutting” ceremony with city officials and project partners will be held on Friday, October 30, 3:00 p.m. at Miami Beach City Hall.

“WiFi Miami Beach will make our city safer, our government more efficient, and provide free Internet access to our residents and visitors,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez.

The broadband technology was developed to strengthen public safety, increase government efficiency in delivery of services, and provide a basic level of access to the public. The City specifically plans to use WiFi technology to support mobile access citywide for public safety teams and other government agencies.

WiFi Miami Beach also offers the public two free networks: City_of_Miami_Beach_WiFi and a content-filtered version, MBKIDS, that provides safe Internet service for Miami Beach children using the same application implemented by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. There is a bilingual, 24/7 help hotline available for users: 305-722-1917.

The WiFi Miami Beach network began a “soft launch” in phases last week. From October 21 - 26, the network was available for use and over 1,100 users registered and connected to the network over 3,800 times. After the ceremony, the network will enter into a reliability period of 90 days during which the network will be available for all users. The network must successfully perform during the reliability period before the City of Miami Beach will accept it from IBM. WiFi Miami Beach is required to meet a 95 percent outdoor and 70 percent coverage inside a building up to the second floor. Additional tuning and relocation of nodes may still occur during this period to enhance coverage and connectivity. The operations and maintenance phase of the project will begin after the City accepts the network and will continue for six years.

The City of Miami Beach entered into an approximately $5.2M agreement with IBM that includes capital investment, installation, and maintenance for six years after the city accepts the system. Miami Beach residents, as part of the agreement, receive discounts to Lenovo products.

On Thursday, October 29th, 2009 at 8:00 pm in Gusman Concert Hall, Festival Miami will present Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Frost School Faculty Artists alongside Dean Shelton G. (“Shelly”) Berg. He won a 2008 Grammy for his arrangement on Queen Latifah’s album Trav’lin’ Light. His stirring arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner, performed by Whitney Houston earned him a platinum record. Legendary drummer Jeff Hamilton is one of the most sought after jazz musicians today. Jazz Journal International calls Hamilton "a most driving and technically accomplished drummer," and the Denver Post says Jeff "brought the crowd to its feet with his amazing hand-drumming." Describing Berg's work as a jazz pianist, the Los Angeles Times stated, “Berg burns hard, his fingers flying over the keyboard while his body nearly levitates off the bench. Exhilarating . . . filled with breakneck parallel runs, sudden rhythmic shifts and harmonic modulations that leave the crowd breathless!”

On Friday, October 30th, 2009 at 8:00pm in Gusman Concert Hall, the Finale of Festival Miami 2009 will feature Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and the Frost Concert Jazz Band for a spectacular evening of symphonic and big band jazz. Shakespeare...AU STYLE MODERNE!!!

Anyone interested? Comment below.

EVENT: “SHAKE IT UP”: You Thought You Knew Shakespeare? Think again…

DATE: On Friday Nov. 20, 2009 at 6:30pm at AE District (3852 N. Miami Avenue in the Miami Design District) -- The Krane, The New Light Studio/Gallery, Schnebly Redland’s Winery, AE District, and The University of Miami Masters Program in Creative Writing will join forces to bring you a night of cocktails and monologues called SHAKE IT UP: a series of original monologues that turn Shakespeare on his head. This is Shakespeare with a 21st century twist, performed by Miami’s hottest talent. Curtain rises at 8pm sharp.

PLACE: The show will be located at AE District (3852 N. Miami Avenue)

COST: Tickets ($15). For more information and advanced ticket sales please call Vanessa Garcia at 305-450-9931 or emailvgarcia43@yahoo.com . She can put you in contact with any and all of the sponsors and/or writers you wish to speak with, as well as the producers and directors of the show.

DESCRIPTION: A group of writers from Miami, New York, Atlanta, and other cities around the U.S., were given a prompt

and told to write a new, contemporary monologue inspired by that prompt. From those submissions, a jury selected the best monologues for performance.

What the writers didn’t know was that the prompts they each received were lines or phrases from within Shakespeare’s body of work.

The result: SHAKE IT UP – a mixture of timeless themes spun with a good dose of 21st century mess, fun, quirkiness, and drama. Pure poetry united under the umbrella of The Bard, without the thous and thus’s.
